At the entrance to the hamlet
At Auris-en-Oisans, in the hamlet of Les Cours, Auberge de la Forêt occupies a former mountain farmhouse at an altitude of 4,430 feet, facing due south toward the Écrins massif and the Meije. The property combines a nine-room hotel with a restaurant set in the hamlet's former sheepfold and remains open year-round. It is a high-altitude stop in the heart of the Oisans, 3 km from the Auris-en-Oisans ski resort, which is linked to the Alpe d'Huez ski area. ACCOMMODATION Nine rooms are spread across three floors, with no elevator, ranging from double rooms for two guests to connecting rooms that can accommodate up to six people. Each room has its own bathroom and toilet, with simple and comfortable furnishings. One room is adapted for guests with reduced mobility. A short walk from the hotel, the Annex is a standalone house that can accommodate up to nine people. Check-in starts at 5 PM and check-out is before 10 AM. RESTAURANT The restaurant is set in the hamlet's former sheepfold, with a vaulted ceiling, exposed beams, a fireplace and around thirty covers. The cuisine is entirely homemade using fresh, seasonal ingredients, combining mountain specialities with more refined dishes, accompanied by a selection of local wines. Dinner is served every evening except Monday. Due to the limited number of tables, reservations are strongly recommended, especially at weekends and during school holidays. The bar is open to both hotel guests and passing motorcyclists. MOTORCYCLIST WELCOME A locked garage provides free parking for around ten motorcycles. It is located at the entrance to the hamlet, where the hotel also asks car drivers to leave their vehicles, as the narrow streets of Les Cours are difficult to navigate. The property also works with motorcycle rental company Envie de Rouler, allowing guests to collect a motorcycle directly on site. ROADS & SCENERY From the hamlet, the road descends into the Romanche Valley and provides access to the major mountain passes of the Oisans. The famous Alpe d'Huez climb, with its twenty-one hairpin bends, begins below in Bourg-d'Oisans. Above the resort, the narrow road over the Col de Sarenne reaches the Clavans plateau before descending toward Mizoën and the Chambon dam. This makes it possible to combine Alpe d'Huez, the Col de Sarenne and the valley in a single loop without retracing your route. Heading east, the RD1091 follows the Romanche Valley through the Combe de Malaval to La Grave, at the foot of the Meije, before continuing toward the Col du Lautaret. From there, the road to the Col du Galibier heads north. To the west, the Col de la Croix de Fer and Col du Glandon are both easily accessible from the valley and can be combined in the same ride. The Galibier, Croix de Fer, Glandon and Col de Sarenne close during winter, while the Col du Lautaret and the Alpe d'Huez climb remain open. At the head of her inn, Virginie brings an energy that reflects who she is: warm, vibrant and deeply authentic. From the moment you arrive, her smile sets the tone. Here, every detail is carefully thought through, while preserving the simplicity that makes the best places so special. Her inn offers the comfort and services of a three-star hotel while retaining the warm, welcoming spirit of a guesthouse. Guests may come for the quality of the rooms, but they return above all for the hospitality. The kind that makes you feel, after just a few hours, as though you are already part of the house. From recommendations for scenic rides to thoughtful touches and conversations over a good meal, Virginie shares much more than a place to stay: she shares her love of the Oisans region and a genuine desire for every guest to leave with wonderful memories. At Virginie’s, luxury is not about the unnecessary. It is about authenticity, generosity and the true pleasure of welcoming others.
