Hôtel Hélianthe is a three-star hotel in the historic district of Lourdes, 150 meters from the Sanctuary and right at the gateway to the Hautes-Pyrénées valleys. Run by the Matocq family and open from April to October, it carries the Relais Motards label and offers an all-inclusive biker pack. Works just as well for a one-night stop as for a longer stay while you explore the valleys. ACCOMMODATION The hotel has 60 rooms, renovated in 2018 in a contemporary style. The front desk handles check-ins and reservations 24/7 check-in starts at 2:00 PM and check-out is at 10:00 AM, with free luggage storage. All rooms are non-smoking. A 50 € deposit per room may be required at booking, cancellation is free up to the day before arrival, and the balance is settled on-site. Pets are not accepted, except for guide dogs. For groups of 15 or more, the hotel can put together a custom quote. DINING The restaurant serves hearty, traditional food every day, made with ingredients sourced from local craftsmen, producers, and farmers. You can opt for half-board or full-board during your stay. Special diets, allergies, and intolerances are accommodated as long as they're flagged at the time of booking. BIKER WELCOME The secure garage is shared with the Hôtel Compostelle, holds over twenty bikes, and is dead easy to access — it's right on the hotel's street. A wash area and tools are available, and biker groups are warmly welcomed. The owner, Claude, is a rider himself and a local: he knows the Bigorre, Béarn, and Basque Country inside out, and will help you build your route depending on where you want to go. A beer is on the house when you arrive, and a discount applies on half-board and full-board stays. The hotel is a partner of the Lourdes Biker Pilgrimage, with special rates for the occasion. ROADS & SCENERY Lourdes sits right on the D918, the mountain pass road that takes in the Aubisque, Soulor, Tourmalet, and Aspin. Heading south, the valley climbs toward Argelès-Gazost then cuts through the gorges to Luz-Saint-Sauveur: from there, the Tourmalet opens up via Barèges and drops down to La Mongie, at the foot of the Pic du Midi, before the Aspin leads to Arreau and, further on, the Peyresourde. From Argelès-Gazost, the Val d'Azun takes you to the Soulor and then the Aubisque, linked by a corniche carved right into the cliff face, with the descent rolling down into Béarn and the Ossau valley. Three dead-end roads round out the picture: Cauterets and the road to Pont d'Espagne, the valley running from Luz up to the village of Gavarnie at the foot of the cirque, and the climb up Hautacam above Argelès-Gazost. The Tourmalet and Aubisque are closed in winter and may still be shut early in the season. Further west, Béarn and then the Basque Country extend the loop beyond the Ossau valley.
