Les Hortensias

Description

Les Hortensias is an upscale bed and breakfast in Lantosque, tucked into the Vésubie Valley deep in the Nice backcountry. Just two rooms, four guests maximum. This place is perfect for a couple or two riding buddies, not a full group. The rooms look out over the garden and the mountains, and the village is a two-minute walk away with four restaurants to choose from. Nice and the coast are about 25 miles out. RIDER WELCOME Parking is private and free: four bikes fit on a locked-gate driveway, with one spot per rider when both rooms are occupied. ROADS & SCENERY The house sits within easy striking distance of the Col de Turini: the climb from La Bollène-Vésubie, with its tight switchbacks and forest roads, is one of the most legendary stages of the Monte Carlo Rally. Heading up the valley, the Col Saint-Martin drops you into Valdeblore and the Tinée. In the other direction, the D2565 runs down through the tight, cliff-cut Gorges de la Vésubie all the way to Plan-du-Var. Across from Lantosque, the small road up to Utelle winds its way to the Sanctuary of the Madonna d'Utelle, a narrow and exposed route with sweeping views across the valleys and, on a clear day, all the way to the sea. The final section of the Route des Grandes Alpes runs through this valley, from the Col Saint-Martin to the Col de Turini before dropping down to Sospel and Menton. On the far side of the Turini, Moulinet and Sospel open up the Col de Castillon and the Col de Braus, enough to wrap up the day via L'Escarène and Levens. For a longer ride, the Var Valley leads to the Gorges du Cians and Daluis with their striking red schist canyon walls.
