Ariège concentrates a great variety of landscapes across an entirely Pyrenean territory. From the rolling foothills of the Couserans to the summits of the Ariège Pyrenees, from the Sault plateau to the valleys of Ax and Vicdessos, the atmosphere changes quickly from one slope to the next. The mountain roads string together passes such as the Port de Lers, the Col d'Agnès or the Col de Port on the D618, through preserved and uncrowded scenery. Between bends, you discover Cathar castles such as Montségur or Roquefixade, decorated caves such as Niaux or the Mas d'Azil, and medieval bastide towns with half-timbered houses. Traffic remains light as soon as you leave the main roads, with well-maintained routes and wild valleys where the horizon is limited to snow-capped ridgelines.
What to see and do in Ariège?
Ariège combines history, heritage and nature with rare density. The caves of Niaux and Mas d'Azil rank among the most beautiful decorated caves in Europe, with their Magdalenian paintings dating back 14,000 years. The Parc de la Préhistoire in Tarascon completes this immersive experience. On the castle side, Montségur and Foix are the symbols of Catharism and medieval resistance, with vertiginous viewpoints. The bastide town of Mirepoix with its covered market, the flower-filled village of Camon listed among the most beautiful in France, Saint-Lizier and its bishops' palace inscribed on the UNESCO list all offer fine cultural stopovers. The underground river of Labouiche, the 246-metre Ars waterfall, the Bassiès lakes and the Bethmale lake are all invitations to slow down. On the gastronomy side, you can savour Bethmale cheese, Pyrenean tomme, mountain charcuterie and Couserans honey.
