Gironde

Gironde is the kind of place where every rider finds what they're looking for. Between the estuary and the ocean, you carve through roads that weave between pine forests, endless vineyards and wild coastline. The Médoc rolls out its landscapes between sea and vines, the Entre-deux-Mers hides stone villages perched above the Garonne, and the Arcachon Basin delivers that unique mix of dunes, oyster shacks and pine groves. Roads wind between wine châteaux and quiet harbours, the light shifts at every bend. You ride through some of the world's most prestigious appellations, trace the banks of Europe's widest estuary, and stumble upon medieval bastides where time seems to stand still. Gironde is the art of riding without rushing, savoring every stretch, every stop.

What to see and do in Gironde?

Gironde unfolds between ocean, estuary and vineyards. Bordeaux, a UNESCO World Heritage city, impresses with its Place de la Bourse, its mirror pool and the Cité du Vin. Head north and the Citadelle de Blaye and Fort Médoc stand as testament to Vauban's military genius. Saint-Émilion, a medieval UNESCO gem, captivates with its monolithic church carved from the rock and its vaulted cellars. On the Arcachon Basin, the Dune du Pilat — the tallest in Europe — delivers a breathtaking panorama spanning forest, ocean and Cap Ferret. Oyster villages like L'Herbe and Andernos reveal the authentic soul of the basin. Along the estuary, the Corniche road from Bourg-sur-Gironde opens up striking viewpoints. In the Entre-deux-Mers, Saint-Macaire and La Réole show off their arcaded houses and ramparts. Further south, Bazas and its Gothic cathedral command the Bazadais countryside. Everywhere you turn, wine châteaux line the route: Margaux, Pauillac, Sauternes. The food scene matches: basin oysters, cannelés, lamprey, grand cru wines. Gironde brings together wild nature, millennial heritage and a genuine art de vivre.

What motorcycle roads should I ride in Gironde?

Gironde is a great playground for riders who want varied scenery and enjoyable roads. The D2 — known as the Route des Châteaux — runs from Blanquefort all the way to the Pointe de Grave through the Médoc vineyards. You chain together the prestigious estates of Margaux, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe on a ribbon of tarmac lined with vines and châteaux. More playful is the famous 100-bend road between Maubuisson and Lacanau-Océan, which throws curve after curve through the heart of the pine forest. The D1215 runs the full length of the Médoc to Verdon-sur-Mer, with detours to the ocean beaches at Lacanau, Hourtin and Montalivet. On the estuary side, the Corniche road hugs the Gironde from Bourg with magnificent views over the water. The D106 and D213 lead to Cap Ferret through the pine groves of the Arcachon Basin. In the Entre-deux-Mers, winding backroads connect hilltop villages like Saint-Macaire, Rions and La Réole. Further south, the D1113 crosses the Bazadais and its rolling countryside. Gironde's roads aren't technically challenging, but they win you over with their ever-changing moods and effortless flow.
